Western tour
From Gaustablikk, the route goes via Rjukan and up Maristigen to the Hardangervidda plateau toward Rauland and Åmot. From there, the road winds down to beautiful Dalen, before climbing through Eidsborg and Morgedal. Heading north again, the route passes through Seljord with a detour to Flatdal, where the viewpoints are well worth a stop, before taking the final mountain pass over Tuddal and back to Gausta.
Along the way, you’ll find several places offering delicious local food, small museums, art exhibitions, and historical landmarks in the heart of Vest-Telemark. We recommend making a few stops along the route to enjoy the majestic nature, culture, and flavors. The trip is about 240 km and estimated to take around 4.5–5 hours. Eastern tour
From Gaustablikk, you descend the winding road to Miland and continue through Austbygdi. From there, follow the route toward Sønstevatn and across the Hardangervidda plateau toward Uvdal, then south to Veggli and Lampeland. Travel through Jondalen and along narrower roads to Gransherad, before reaching the wide final stretch along the deep and historic Lake Tinn – and finally looping back up the curves to Gaustablikk.
Along the way, you'll find local food, small museums, art exhibits, and historic sites in the heart of Vest-Telemark. We recommend several stops to enjoy the stunning nature, culture, and flavors. The trip is about 290 km and estimated to take around 5–6 hours. See the route on Google Maps here!

Eastern tour II
From Gaustablikk, you wind down to Miland and through Austbygde. Continue toward Øvrebygde and onto the gravel road Skirvedalsvegen toward Veggli, surrounded by stunning mountain scenery. Take a break at Skirvedalens or Veggli Fjellstue before reaching highway 40. At Bæver, turn off through Jondalen and follow narrow roads to Gransherad. From there, head to E134 and on to Sauland. Tuddalsvegen then takes you up the valley and over the majestic Flisetjørnskaret at 1,260 m.
The final stretch runs through high mountain terrain along Heddersvatn, with mighty Gaustatoppen across the water, before returning to Gaustablikk.
