About the hike:

Join us for an incredible hiking adventure through beautiful, untouched mountain landscapes as we cross the municipal border between Tinn and Hjartdal. The trail takes you through gently rolling terrain, passing several mountain lakes and peaks, while offering magnificent views of Gaustatoppen, Store- and Lille Gaustakne, Blånipa, Blefjell, and Ørnenipa. The journey begins on a gravel road at Gausta, alongside Vatnedalstjønn, and continues through Sløkjedalen. From there, we follow a trail southward towards the Hjartdal municipality border. The terrain becomes more undulating, leading us to Svartetjønn and Kyrstjønn. Much of the hike is above the tree line at an elevation of approximately 1000 meters before descending to Tuddal Mountain Hotel. Please ensure you have sturdy hiking shoes as some sections can be wet (marshy). Along the way, our guide will find a suitable spot with a fantastic view for a snack break, followed by a delicious and well-deserved lunch at Tuddal. At the mountain hotel, there may also be an opportunity to sample beers from their own microbrewery. The trip concludes with transportation back to Gaustablikk Fjellresort.

This excursion is ideal for families, couples, groups of friends, or small groups with some prior mountain experience but who may not be familiar with the area. While there is a fair distance to cover, the hike is easily manageable with scheduled breaks, making it accessible even for those less experienced in mountain hiking. Prepare for a breathtaking trek with panoramic views!

The trip itinerary will be adapted to the group, and breaks will be taken as needed. The duration of the hike may vary.

Selstali to Gaustatoppen

Spectacular Tour with Guide from Selstali to Gaustatoppen including round-trip bus transportation between Gaustablikk Fjellresort and Gaustablikk, and an energy-packed meal package.

Age: From 12 years old (or younger with parental approval).
When: on request
Price: 895 NOK each person

  • Meeting point: Gausta Aktivitetssenter
  • Prerequisites: Experienced in mountain hiking and in good physical condition.
  • Difficulty level: Moderately challenging
  • Equipment: Good hiking shoes, mountain clothing suitable for the weather (windproof and breathable), backpack with water, a warm sweater.

About the hike:

The family tour begins with bus transportation from Gaustablikk Fjellresort to Selstali Seter, beautifully located at the base of Gaustatoppen towards the west. Here, there will be time for a morning coffee on the grounds and some more information about the upcoming hike. The journey starts by heading south through the beautiful Gausdalen before turning east and beginning the steep ascent to the roof of Telemark. This section is steep and technical before joining the trail along the southern side of the peak. The ascent is more challenging than the traditional trail many choose from Stavsro, but it is entirely manageable for a group experienced in mountain hiking. The advantage is that fewer hikers choose this route, allowing you to enjoy nature, the weather, and your hiking companions to a greater extent. The trail leads you to the Sherpa stairs to the DNT tourist cabin, and further up to the radio tower. The ascent takes approximately 4-5 hours.

The meal package can be enjoyed on the way up, at the top, near the radio tower, or outside the tourist cabin. It is also possible to purchase waffles, coffee, and other snacks at the tourist cabin. Regardless of where you choose to have your lunch break, the view will be absolutely stunning (weather permitting) and unforgettable!

The tour will be adapted to the group, and breaks will be taken as needed. The duration of the tour may vary.

Mountain adventure to Torekyrkja

Experience one of the most beautiful mountain adventures in Gausta! The day trip takes you to one of the highest peaks in Gausta.

Age: From 12 years old (or younger with parental approval).
When: on request
Price: 695 NOK each person
Number of participants: Maximum 8 people.

  • Meeting point: At the meeting point sign near Vatnedalen/Kvitåvatn gravel road.
  • Prerequisites: Children and parents should be familiar with hiking and in normal physical condition.
  • Difficulty level: More challenging.
  • Equipment: Good hiking boots, weather-appropriate mountain clothing (windproof and breathable), backpack with water, a warm sweater.

While many choose to hike up to Gaustatoppen as their goal during their stay at Gausta, if you'd rather embark on an equally stunning summit hike that fewer people opt for, consider the guided hike to Toreskyrkja. This journey takes you through magnificent mountain surroundings, traversing various terrains, from gravel roads, marshes, wide and well-maintained trails to sheep tracks, all the way up to one of Gausta's highest peaks. The view from Toreskyrkja at 1371 meters above sea level is impeccable, offering panoramic vistas of Gausta, Tuddal, and Gaustatoppen. This is a trip your family will truly cherish and remember as a delightful vacation memory! The hike may appear more demanding than the one to Gaustatoppen, with steep sections, but with the right equipment, packed meals, and planned breaks, the journey will be a breeze!

The mountain adventure starts at the meeting point near Vatnedalen/Kvitåvatn (gravel road), approximately 1.5 km from Gaustablikk Fjellresort. The hike begins on a gravel road before entering the trail that ascends the mountainside. There are several viewpoints along the way, including a nice plateau with a view of Gaustablikk, the cabin areas, and Gausta Ski Resort. The hike continues with some ups and downs, passing through blueberry bushes and beautiful mountain scenery. Before the final stretch to the summit, you will come across a ridge with a view of Heddersvann, a perfect spot for a short break before tackling the last elevation meters up to Toreskyrkja. On the summit, it's worth enjoying a delicious lunch prepared by the chefs at Gaustablikk Fjellresort. The descent follows the same path as the ascent and concludes at the starting point. The total estimated duration of the hike is 4.5 to 5 hours.

The hike is tailored to the group, and breaks are taken as needed. The time spent on the hike may vary.
